Architect of the Capitol Student Trainee (Mechanical Engineer) in Washington DC, District Of Columbia

Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Facilities Operations Division. We are seeking and Engineer Student Trainee who will assist professional engineers in the operations of the office. The selectee will receive increasingly more responsible assignments to provide training and development in Mechanical Engineering. Responsibilities Tour of Duty: 6:30 am - 6:00 pm; 10-15 hours per week. Hours may vary depending on the student's school schedule Responsibilities: Performs well-defined tasks in various aspects of mechanical engineering. Receives formal training and on-the-job instruction designed to familiarize the trainee with the functions and operations of the office and to provide experience in the application of mechanical engineering knowledge to projects. Assists jurisdiction Energy Manager in monitoring energy management projects conducted by AOC workers and contractors. Audits the use of electrical, mechanical and other energy within the Jurisdiction’s buildings. Monitors and tracks data to develop reports for higher managers. Monitors the condition and operations of mechanical systems within the jurisdiction. Surveys building conditions, analyzes equipment and apparatus design, assists in testing criteria and develops action plans to ensure systems and equipment are in compliance with prescribed and generally accepted standards and procedures. Observes and monitors construction and maintenance operations to identify unforeseen problems. Recommends design modifications as deemed appropriate to resolve problems resulting from unusual conditions Become proficient in a broad, practical and precise knowledge of electronic principles and practices to perform a range of electronic mechanical work relative to testing, troubleshooting, and calibrating integrated system components. Perform operational checks of HVAC mechanical equipment such as air handlers, chilled water distribution systems, hydronic water systems, and pneumatic controls to optimize the operation of the systems through control of electronic control of valves, dampers and other control devices. Interface with other engineers and support personnel to isolate problems, determine the nature and scope of repairs by use of schematic and applicable drawings. Responsible for utilizing knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be able to pass a drug test. You must meet the Education requirements. Students must meet the following requirements: Attend an accredited college or university on at least a half-time basis, but must have completed at least 30 semester hours. Enrolled in an academic program that is directly related to the position Has at least a 2.9 grade point average (GPA) or higher on a scale of 4.0 upon initial appointment. Must have successfully completed introductory coursework if a student attends a professional school. Must be at least 16 years of age upon entry into the program and pass the suitability requirements.. Must complete a Cooperative Agreement between the school, student and the AOC. Qualifications To qualify, you must currently be a (3rd year) Junior or (4th year) Senior college or university student majoring in engineering with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale.Must meet the university or college Co-operative Education Program requirements. Education You must be currently enrolled as a college or university student majoring in engineering. You MUST meet the following qualification requirements for Student Trainees for the grades listed below: GS-5 (College Junior) -Completed 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) GS-6 (College Senior) -Completed 90 semester hours ( 135 quarter hours) It is important to understand that your assignment requires continuing pursuit of a bachelor's degree in engineering. Changing your curriculum to any other major may preclude your employment in this student trainee position. If the student employee's GPA falls below 2.9 at any time during employment, an academic improvement period to raise the GPA may be extended by the AOC. Additional Information Welcome Veterans.
