The Safety Management System (SMS) Program Manager is the subject matter expert responsible for developing and managing the SMS Program for the Flight Operations division at Alaska Airlines (AS). As an individual contributor, this role assists in defining long-term strategy, develops and applies solutions to complex issues, and collaborates with representatives from other operational divisions at Alaska Airlines (AS) and Horizon Air (QX).
Act as the lead subject matter expert in managing activities of the SMS program for the Flight Operations division.
Own the process and program of internal and external audit, non-compliance, and irregularity data to identify trends, safety concerns and effectiveness of risk controls and provides input into Data Analysis Group (DAG) and Safety Review Board (SRB).
Problem solve and ensure that reviewing, analyzing, and reporting of safety and compliance related data collected through various programs in the Flight Operations division and summarizing findings with minimal oversight.
Make recommendations to Director, Regulatory Compliance and Safety Systems, Flight Operations Regulatory Compliance and Certificate Program Manager and the Data Analyst FOQM to develop and maintain an effective SMS data analysis process.
Implement and manage solutions for Flight Operations related SRMs and SRAs, follow up on mitigation plans, and manage any changes required by the SMS program.
Represent Flight Operations in all SMS related meetings and collaborates with representatives from other operational divisions at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.
Promote and champion consistent SMS use by facilitating the development of tools and techniques that strengthen safety assurance and safety risk management.
Apply knowledge to assist in non-compliance and safety investigations.
Acts as a subject matter expert in auditing various internal programs for Flight Operations.
Job-Specific Skills, Experience and Education
4 years of experience in a technical airline role that provided exposure to data relevant to SMS programs.
A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in aviation safety or a related discipline proficient database skill (e.g., Microsoft Access, SQL, etc), or an additional two years of relevant training /experience in lieu of this degree.
Must have a good understanding of Safety Management Systems.
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Minimum age of 18.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook).
Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening).
Must exercise considerable judgement and initiative, pro-actively develop clear solutions to complex problems.
Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to problem-solve, multi-task, and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of EtQ reliance software data base.
