Kaiser Permanente Senior Counsel - Litigation in Oakland, California

Job Summary:

As a member of the Litigation Group’s team of business and employment litigators, this attorney will focus on single plaintiff, PAGA claims, and class action employment litigation. Most of this work will arise from California matters, but this attorney also will manage employment litigation matters in other markets. This attorney will also manage business litigation matters, ranging from provider disputes to government-facing matters to complex subpoenas to KP as a non-party.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage outside counsel in employment litigation matters, both single plaintiff and class action, as well as PAGA matters.

  • Advise internal clients regarding defense, settlement, and trial of employment litigation matters.

  • Attend mediations as key authorized representative of KP.

  • Advise Health Plan & Hospitals leadership regarding complex business disputes, provider litigation, and high-profile cases with potentially significant reputational and business impact.

    Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience litigating or managing the litigation of single plaintiff, PAGA, and class action employment claims.

    Education

  • Bachelors degree. Juris Doctorate degree required.

    License, Certification, Registration

  • State Bar License (California) within 24 months of hire

    Additional Requirements:

  • Solid work ethic, excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), and sharp analytical skills.

  • Ability to work independently and to work collaboratively as part of a team.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of twelve (12) years of experience litigating or managing the litigation of single plaintiff, PAGA, and class action employment claims, strongly preferred.

  • Substantial litigation experience for health care clients (excluding workers- compensation and medical malpractice).

  • Trial experience.

  • Interest in/familiarity with e-discovery trends and developments.

  • Experience representing complex organizations in litigation or investigations.

  • Ability to manage portfolio of employment litigation matters with high degree of independence.

  • Successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in most or all of the above-referenced areas.

  • Excellent academic and professional qualifications.

  • Excellent references.

  • Superior writing and analytical skills based on substantial experience advising complex organizations.

  • Solid work ethic, excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), and sharp analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated qualities consistent with the Department-s preferred operating style, i.e., mutual respect, fairness, honesty, ethical behavior, independent, creative thinking while operating as a team member.
