The Atlantic Senior Associate Editor, Culture (The Atlantic) in New York, New York

The Atlantic is seeking an editor to join our expanding Culture team. Our coverage spans popular culture, literature, society, and family, including the forces that influence people's personal lives. This person will support the team's senior editors and can expect to work on a variety of deeply reported stories and essays, including explorations of cultural trends and subcultures, issues affecting relationships and friendships, as well as film, TV, music, and literary criticism.
The ideal candidate will have several years of experience as an editor, including in working with reported features. Experience editing essays and cultural criticism is a plus. The candidate will be a strong line editor, skilled with shaping arguments, and have the flexibility to work on different kinds of stories. This editor will be relentlessly curious, well-read in magazine journalism, well-organized, and persistent in completing tasks. The candidate will be familiar with The Atlantic's coverage of Culture and Family, and with its editorial mission.
Job duties will include:
Editing staff and freelance writers
Generating story ideas andhelping coordinate special series with the projects team
Assessing freelance pitches and managing pitch inboxes
Fact-checking and research
Coordinating with copy edit and art teams on stories, and working on other functions of production and display
Some team-wide organizational responsibilities
This position is full-time.
