Los Alamos National Laboratory Ecosystem Functional Signatures Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
We are seeking a postdoctoral research assistant who will join the Ecosystem Functional Signatures Collaboration to perform cross-cutting research for remote proliferation detection, using both computational and experimental approaches. This collaboration comprises researchers from the Safeguards Science and Technology group (NEN-1), which works to safeguard nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material; the Earth System Observations group (EES-14), which performs laboratory and field-based experimental and observational biogeoscience research, data analysis and modeling; and the Statistical Sciences group (CCS-6), which develops and collaborates on the application of statistical methods across a wide range of high-impact science, technology, and engineering areas.
You will contribute to collaborative projects with a focus on shared outcomes, publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at professional conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience conducting experimental R&D in physical science, engineering or environmental sciences or demonstrated experience in implementing data analytics methods in diverse datasets.
Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
Excellent writing and communication skills, as evidenced by publications & oral presentations at conferences and the cover letter
Self-motivated and effective team worker
Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
Experience in computational methods such as optimization and machine learning
Experience programming in either Python, R, Fortran, Matlab, or a similar language
Ability to be innovative in leveraging skills (such as the analysis of large data sets or expertise in programming) to solve difficult technical problems.
Demonstrated experience in material science and/or physical characterization methods
Experience with vegetation, fire or crop modeling
The position does not require a security clearance. However, ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance is desirable.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
