Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. is recruiting for a Senior Public Affairs Specialist in Grand Junction, CO.

The selected candidate will provide ongoing assistance in community outreach activities that support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Legacy Management (LM) mission, cultivate relationships within stakeholder communities, create content that informs different audiences about LM activities, and report on outcomes.

  • Examples of the kind of the projects the public affairs specialist will be responsible for include:

  • Planning, coordinating, and implementing programs and activities that inform and engage the public, industry, and all levels of government about DOE’s activities

  • Creating community involvement plans, including identification of and targeted outreach to priority audiences, key issues, and recommended messages and communications delivery methods

  • Coordinating public affairs support with contractor operations staff and federal clients

  • Writing and preparing presentations, talking points, backgrounders, fact sheets, press releases, news stories, technical reports, outreach publications, brochures, digital content and other printed and electronic materials intended for distribution to the public or news media

  • Developing, implementing, and facilitating meetings and events that inform stakeholders about LM’s work, mission, and priorities

  • Plan, coordinate logistics, and produce support for public meetings, tours, open houses, and special events

  • Gathering on stakeholder input via as face-to-face conversations, event surveys, and email input and sharing results

  • Participating in local community events (e.g. cultural activities, STEM gatherings, etc.).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs, Communications, Journalism, or related field.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organization and project management skills

  • Proven problem-solving, decision-making, and negotiation skills

  • Demonstrated customer service orientation

  • Strong attention to detail and quality

  • Ability to interact and communicate complex information with diverse technical and nontechnical stakeholder groups in easily understandable format and tailored to audiences

  • Organized with ability to prioritize and manage client expectations across multiple, competing projects/priorities with aggressive due dates and quick turn-around times

  • Can-do attitude and collaborative work style; flexibility and adaptability

  • Ability to distill complex technical information into understandable and engaging content

  • Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skilled implementer with strong writing and editing skills highly preferred

  • Media relations experience

  • Experience communicating technical and/or scientific information to non-technical and or non-scientific audiences

  • Ability to distill complex technical information into understandable and engaging content

  • Experience engaging with stakeholders via social media and other digital platforms

  • Demonstrated ability to quantify communications results and outcomes

  • Creating brand journalism content

  • Familiarity with the U.S. Department of Energy

  • Familiarity working as a contractor for the U.S. government

  • Familiarity with radioactive and chemical waste, environmental contamination, hazardous material and the associated long-term surveillance and maintenance, records management, work force restructuring and benefits continuity, property management, land use planning, and community assistance
