The successful candidate for this role will already be leading a team of Commercial or Finance professionals to support a small division or major programme, managing long-term contracts in a defence or engineering environment. You will have demonstrated outstanding leadership capabilities and be recognized as a creator of value in your current organization. This role is full-time based at our Gosport office with some flexible working.

The Senior Commercial Lead reports to the Head of Commercial for Vertical Lift. In this role, you’ll be partnering with the programme leadership to drive commercial and financial performance and manage risk across the programme portfolio. You will be responsible for ensuring execution of decisions within a large team of financial and commercial professionals to help deliver the programme’s significant growth expectations and meet ever more challenging financial goals whilst protecting the enterprise and adhering to the highest standards of ethics and compliance. As a member of the Commercial senior leadership team for BDUK you will help formulate and deliver our functional priorities and strategies, aimed at creating an internationally recognized centre of excellence delivering value as a trusted partner through powerful advice and innovation. We are pursuing step-change improvement in our systems, processes and our capabilities and you will be essential to our success in these endeavours.

The suitable candidate will have strong leadership and business partnering skills as well as an understanding of commercial negotiations, business planning, scheduling and analysis. This needs to be combined with experience working in a complex, international, matrix environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Operational responsibility for all implementation of all decisions taken at Gate Closure Board (GCB) from a commercial/finance perspective. Including:

  • Ensuring that all Commercial and Financial decisions taken at GCB are implemented within the commercial and finance team.

  • Longer term, the Senior Commercial Lead will work with the Business Development team to ensure best practice at the GCB is implemented, including an updated gate pack (which is driven operationally within the commercial and finance team) and being involved in the pre-meetings so that an initial review is performed before the GCB

  • Support Programme Managers, organizations and functional areas to set stretching functional and commercial objectives

  • Apply budget and schedule management principles and practices to ensure that realistic budgets are set and attained for multiple projects across the programme.

  • Monitor organizational financial and schedule metrics to support budgetary planning and to determine corrective action to maintain target performance levels

  • Work with the team to develop financial forecasts and report against them, completing programme Estimates at Completion (EAC) to assess the financial status of the programme throughout programme life.

  • Work with other senior Commercial and Finance leaders to streamline processes and improve communication across organizational and geographical boundaries.

  • Coach and mentor employees and team leads, as well as providing development opportunities and support to expand the capabilities of the team.

  • Create a culture of continuous improvement in the team by communicating and deploying best practice to improve cost, quality, delivery, employee job satisfaction and customer satisfaction

  • Establish strong relationships with external customers in the UK Ministry of Defence

  • Act as delegate for the Head of Commercial when required, to provide commercial leadership and authority to the business

  • Ensure all Commercial Finance MI is produced accurately and on time

  • Drive specific Finance and Commercial long range projects (which will be defined throughout the year, including):

  • For example scoping and explaining succinctly the commercial and finance risk surrounding Brexit, including working with supply chain and other departments to understand the overall BDUK risk. Presenting this in a succinct format for presentation to the LT

  • Run the operational cadence and action implementation behind finance and commercial Leadership Team meetings

Preferred education and experience:

  • Ideally educated to degree level with an accounting and/or commercial qualification or MBA

  • Strong technical background, with the ability to guide and develop others in the essential financial and commercial management skills

  • Demonstrable commercial and financial acumen

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • A proven ability to see opportunities and risks and to manage them to create enhanced value for the organisation

  • A positive work attitude and team building approach

  • An adaptable and resilient character, able to cope with changing requirements and multiple priorities who can help their team remain effective in difficult times

  • Strong business partnering and influencing skills; able to explain and troubleshoot financial issues with non-finance professionals and inspire them to achieve greater financial performance

  • Experience of providing business management on large scale complex programmes, ideally within the defence or engineering sectors

  • Experience of working in an international environment, ideally with US contact, would be advantageous

  • Prior experience of contracting with the UK Ministry of Defence is desirable
