Department Summary

Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon and provides wide ranging services to campus. Information Services consists of four major functional areas: Customer Experience, which serves as the key contact point for interactions with campus clients and customers; Applications & Middleware, which manages and supports applications, integration services, identity management and data management; Information Security, which helps protect virtual or physical information; and Technology Infrastructure, which provides administration and support for the software, hardware, and services needed to support the campus IT environment. Information Services also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center. IS works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Data Center Operations Manager, this position provides high level technical support for multiple complex hardware and software systems critical to the operations of the physical facilities of the campus’ three data centers. The position has a key role in supporting the data centers’ environmental controls, power distribution and monitoring systems.

The Data Systems Center Specialist (DSCS) works with a small, efficient team that is passionately curious about our three data centers’ electrical, mechanical, and security systems. Our data centers are used to host everything from Talapus, a high-performance computing research cluster used by more than 200 research groups, to provide a robust secure space for the day-to-day network and computing fundamental to the business needs of the university.

The incumbent provides oversight of vendors and contractors working in our data centers. It may provide supervision for student employees and is expected to provide them instructions and will assign appropriate tasks to them. The position uses Nagios (NMS) on a daily basis to monitor the health of our critical data center HVAC and power systems and respond when needed.

The DSCS uses a Siemens building automation systems (BAS) to monitor our data centers’ environment. This work may include diagnosing a change in our chilled water-based cooling system’s conditions followed by an onsite inspection of a piping system, or the gathering of logged data from our systems. This includes adjusting the environmental controls code or update the Nagios monitoring configuration as needed. It requires the ability to learn and address issues as they arise within these systems and dynamically prioritize issues.

Regular interactions will occur with various campus stakeholders, including HVAC technicians, electricians, or power systems technicians onsite, as we are responsible for overseeing the timely maintenance of our data centers systems. This position may also work closely with engineers and construction contractors who are brought in to work on upgrades or maintenance projects at the data centers.

The incumbent must be able to share knowledge and will be able to document process clearly. Sharing knowledge with teammates helps the group to be advocates for better practices that increase our data centers’ reliability. Our group routinely uses schematics and technical documentation to learn more about our data centers systems. which includes the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, failure analysis, planning, and performance analysis related to these data center systems. This position also works in geographic information systems (GIS) to maintain accurate maps of our campus’ physical infrastructure.

This position requires a strong ability to work independently, while managing complex projects which integrate multiple technologies and organizations. This position’s work will involve coordination with Information Services staff, data center tenants, UO Campus Planning and Facilities Management staff, outside vendors and contractors, and our student employees. Utilization of ITIL practices, including incident management and change management, to manage our work effectively across the organization.

The DSCS makes recommendations about operations in our data centers which can have a serious impact to services across the institution. This position upholds both security and safety practices for our data centers. This includes the ability and proactive willingness to troubleshoot complex technical problems involving multiple systems, vendors, and technologies. The position will proactively analyze data center technical, mechanical, or organizational processes to make recommendations for improvements in reliability, functionality, safety and efficiency.

Working with student employees regularly gives us the chance to teach them what the hidden world of a data center is all about. Long term, we are looking at newer data center technology like liquid cooling to help our data center stay efficient and relevant to the sustainability needs of technology going forward while reliably supporting the teaching and research mission of the University.

Operating Hours:

The DSCS typically works during normal business hours, weekdays Monday to Friday. There is flexibility available when scheduling those hours based on mutually agreed upon time. The schedule should be consistent once determined. Example, 4-days working 10 hours, remote work twice a week, etc.

Professional Development and Training:

We will provide both professional training on the data center’s Siemens Desigo BAS system to help bring this position up to speed within our BAS environment. Experience with building or industrial automation controls would be desirable. A willingness to learn and refresh these skills over time is a necessity using both self-taught training materials and professional development.

Driving Requirement:

It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.

On-Call Rotation:

This position may be required to serve on-call duties on a rotational basis. This may include responding to emergencies during off hours, including weekends and holidays. On-site, response to campus is expected within 30 minutes from the time of the call, if needed. Communication is via a cellular phone.

Essential Personnel:

This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times. Some of these responses may be able to be provided in a hybrid capacity.

Minimum Requirements

  • This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge in operating systems programs, maintenance, systems administration, and network systems that would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, engineering mathematics, telecommunications or a related technical field, or 3 years of equivalent technical training and/or experience.

Professional Competencies

  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to adapt within a rapidly changing technical environment.

  • Ability to read and explain schematic diagrams and technical manuals and to write technical documentation like workflows, Standard Operating procedures (SOP), and Method of Procedure (MOP) for a wide range of audiences.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  • Ability to manage technical projects involving diverse user groups including technical consultants, engineers, construction trade contractors, or end-user stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A year of experience scripting, with an understanding of fundamental programming constructs. A preference is given for experience in PowerShell or experience in a current programming language.

  • Three years of experience providing support in an IT enterprise role. Must provide support in a technical role that is responsible for services that have impact across the business or organization.

  • Three years of experience working in either a data center support, systems administration support, or other support role that is responsible for critical I.T. systems.

  • A year minimum of experience with monitoring technology or network monitoring systems (NMS) systems may include Nagios, simple network management protocol (SNMP) and short message system (SMS).
