Duration: 6 Months

Location: Corning, NY

Job Title: Geology Technician

Hours:Mon-Fri, but must be flexible, Overtime, on-call, and weekend work may be required at times to support test schedules

Rate of Pay: Up to $27.00 per hour Based on Experience

Description:

The successful applicant will combine hand-on experience with scientific principles to provide technical support to engineers involved in testing, research and development for such materials as glass, refractory, ceramics, metals, and polymers. This position will focus on materials X-ray tomography and data analysis, and some hands-on sample preparation in a laboratory environment.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Conduct materials preparation and X-ray tomography scanning

  • Analyze tomography data

  • Support Geologist and Engineering staff with sample preparation and other hands-on lab work

  • Provide off-hours & weekend support as needed

  • This position will be focused on X-ray tomography and data analysis as the top priority. The person will be trained for sample preparation and standardized testing areas as needed.

Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal - domestic and/or international travel may occasionally be required but would be the exception

Required Education & Experience:

  • AAS in Engineering Technology or related field

  • 2+ years of experience in a technician role or similar function

Required Skills:

  • Expertise with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel for data analysis

  • Knowledge of various materials and their properties (like density, chemistry, etc)

  • Knowledge of safety systems and how they relate to machine work, furnace work and material handling.

  • Able to gather information independently using established and defined procedures. Still generally obtains input to solve more complex problems.

  • Sound knowledge of job and a substantial acquaintance with the general aspects of the job. Intermediate level technical understanding.

  • Works under general site supervision.

  • Good written & oral communications skills

Desired Skills / Qualifications:

  • Some microscopy experience

  • Knowledge of X-ray equipment and images

  • 1+ year experience using visual analysis software is preferred

Soft Skills:

  • Creative & innovative approach to problem solving

  • Positive demeanor and collaborative approach

  • Ability to learn, be flexible, and adapt quickly

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic
