Nature of Work:

  • This is a part time research position, in this NCCIH U01 Mind and Body Clinical Trial, we will optimize a migraine prevention treatment package focused on four mind and body skills that will be delivered by nurses. The study is a nurse delivered intervention helping pediatric patients suffering with migraine headaches learn mind-body techniques in order to better manage their pain. Nurses will be trained in several mind and body approaches, specifically diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and biofeedback, which can improve outcomes for children and adolescents with chronic pain.

  • For this MOST Trial, 3 components will be tested: session time with nurses for introduction of the skills (dose of 20 or 40 minutes); daily home practice of skills for 8 weeks (dose of a simple handout approach or use of an active, guided eHealth application); and adherence prompt phone call at 1-month (dose of a call or no call). A 28-day baseline assessment of headache days (using a headache diary) will be followed by a 2-month intervention period. Change from baseline to the last 28 days of the intervention period will be examined. In prior trials we have seen clinically meaningful improvements in 2 months.
