Job Summary

This position is responsible for overseeing the Movin’ Mavs Adapted Sports Program and related staff, operations, and strategic direction. Additional duties include working with the Campus Recreation Intramural program developing and implementing recreational adapted sports programs for all students with disabilities and as unified sports programs with all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise adapted athletics staff, including men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball coaches, adapted athletic training staff and adapted athletics academic advising staff.

  • Marketing and promotion – work with Campus Recreation staff to design and produce website and marketing materials for program and for special events; Develop and coordinated opportunities for participation at campus and community events; Work with campus and community partners (Dept. of Communication, English Language Institute, Dept. of Kinesiology, Campus Recreation) to promote Movin’ Mavs program.

  • Team and Program management – tournament and travel scheduling; outreach activities scheduling and travel; budget and scholarship management; design/order team apparel; participate in campus committees and campus activities as representative of the program; Coordinate officials and volunteers for tournaments and special events; Work with Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks, Dallas Lady Mavericks, Dallas Junior Mavericks and DFW Free Wheelers on equipment use, scheduling, practices and clinics; Research campus and community partnerships for the benefit of the adapted sports program.

  • Intramurals and other sports programming – work with the Department of Campus Recreation to design and implement recreational activities, participation opportunities and events for the students on campus with disabilities as well as events that will give able body students opportunities to participate in disability sport events (United events).

  • Sponsorships, grant writing/reporting, fundraising; Find grants and sponsors who are interested in supporting the Mission and Vision of the Movin’ Mavs Programs; work with the Office of Grants and Contracts and the UTA Development Office to submit grants, monitor the grant spending and submit timely grant reports to respective agencies; Write thank you notes to sponsors and support donations and maintain sponsor and donor relationships.

  • Seek out and develop academic partnerships on campus for academic and research collaborations. Partner with research collaboration and projects for the growth of the program and the sport.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

    Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University.

  • Five years experience with adapted athletics or related areas.

  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience my be substituted as appropriate.

  • Occasionally drive a UTA vehicle. Other functions as assigned.

  • The Assistant Director will be a person with the leadership and vision necessary to continue the success and growth of the program.

  • He/she will demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills along with the ability to manage multiple tasks.

  • Other skills include budget/general accounting, athletic training, strength and conditioning and experience in disability sports.

  • Experience coaching athletes with disabilities is strongly recommended.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Coaching or related field.

  • Record of success in coaching athletes with disabilities.

  • Working knowledge of National Wheelchair Basketball Association.

  • CPR /First Aid Certification.

  • International level coaching experience.

  • Excellent communication skills.

    Working Conditions

Exposure to standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity. Security Sensitive; criminal background check conducted. Required to travel and work flexible hours.
